Coomer Cove is the blog of Brandon Coomer, a southern gospel music fan who lives in northeast Tennessee. I will post my thoughts on southern gospel music, sports, and whatever else grabs my attention. I am not a professional writer, so I am not promising literary masterpieces.

Brandon, this is a great blog and I truly like the
Gold City items I have seen. I may be a tad bit
partial to them.

Somewhere on your “Gold City” tribute page is a small error: you state that Benny Blackburn sang the tenor part on the recording in 1983 titled “Command Performance” on the song titled “Moving Up To Gloryland”. That is incorrect. I know this because…
I have had this debate before with others, so I just decided to go to a source. I emailed both Brian Free and Ivan Parker. Ivan replied,
“While I was not with the group on that song (he was, however, on the song that the Singing Americans did on the same lp) Brian did indeed sing the tenor part on it,,”
Brian Free replied “Yes, that was me; Benny sang for 11 months when I left right after our youngest son was born. I have been this same question I don’t know how many times…”
Brian went on to say that Benny never sang on a recording with Gold City; that is wrong. He did, but he sang on the so-called “bluelight specials”. I believe you mention this on the tribute site. Brian may have been referring to major recordings.
Which brings up a question for you to work on: around about the same time (1983) Gold City recorded a song on a Christmas recording titled “A Heartwarming Christmas”. Who is the tenor on that?
