Why do the Patriots think they are better than everyone?

The quotes below come from this article on

Steelers FS Anthony Smith:

“We’re going to win,” he  said Wednesday. “Yeah, I can guarantee a win. As long as we come out and do what we got to do. Both sides of the ball are rolling, and if our special teams come through for us, we’ve got a good chance to win.”

Patriots QB Tom Brady:

“Well done is better than well said.  That’s been the motto of the team.”

So, cheating to win is better than having confidence.  I see.

Patriots LB Junior Seau

“That wouldn’t happen in this locker room. It just wouldn’t.  We won’t allow it. We don’t talk. What we try to do is just work every day and build for tomorrow. That’s all we do.”

So, does building for tomorrow still involve video taping the opponents coaches?

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick:

“We can sit around and put a bunch of stuff up on a board and write stuff down on paper and all of that.  I think in the end it comes down to whether you can outplay the other team on Sunday or not outplay them. On a priority basis, that’s what our priority is, trying to prepare well and play well.”

Yes, the New England Patriots have better things to do than say, “We’re going to win.” They have to dissect all their illegal video tape footage of their opponents.  Belichick said it himself, “that’s what our priority is, trying to prepare well.”  History shows, he prepares by cheating.  That is so much better than having confidence and saying “We’re going to win.”  Shame on you, Anthony Smith!

In all seriousness, I wouldn’t be rooting for the Patriots to lose so much if they didn’t have their “we’re better than you, so we don’t need to cheat, and we’re going to run up the score to prove it” attitude.  The fact is, they did cheat.  Whether they needed to or not, they cheated more than once.  They were caught videoing signals several times over more than one season (but no one could catch them with the actual video in their hands) and the NFL sent out memos reminding them it was illegal.  They kept doing it anyway.  And in their arrogance, they did it against their former defensive coordinator that knew their procedures and their camera guy got caught with the video (in his defense, he tried to get away, but the police stopped him long enough for NFL security to get involved and take the video tape from him).

You know, I admit I’m a Jets fan, so of course the SpyGate thing bugged me.  But everytime I think I’m over it, the Patriots or a Patriots fan says or does something to make me furious again.

I want the Steelers to win, but I think poetic justice dictates that the Dolphins should be the team to end the Patriots undefeated season (just like the ’85 team beat the Bears).  The fact that it would be the Dolphins only win of the year would make it so much sweeter.  I’m saying this and I am the BIGGEST anti-Dolphin fan in the world.

Of course, I would also love it if the Jets beat the Patriots, but I’m just hoping the Patriots don’t score 100 on the Jets.

  1. Who is Anthony Smith — oh yeah, a guy who wasn’t good enough to start until part way thru the season and is a graduate of the Terrell Owens / Chad Johnson Charm School. jk LOL!!!

  2. LOL

I agree, Anthony Smith is a nobody compared to a lot of NFL players. He’s only starting due to an injury. My thing is the media makes a big deal out of a guy saying his team is going to win. Imagine what they would do to someone who said that his team was going to lose. You can’t win with the media.

And then the Patriots take their we’re better than that attitude. That is what makes me mad. They have no right to talk down to anyone. Their head coach cost them that. The organization cheated. Period. They have to live with that. If they don’t like it, blame their coach. Not the Jets for catching them, not the media for covering it. The whole thing is on the shoulders of one man – Bill Belichick.

  3. Go Pats……..:-)…….so much for Smith’s guarantee……..

…..just because the Pat’s got caught with tape, doesn’t mean they were/are the only one’s doing it. They just happened to get caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

……looks like my Dolphins need to take some lessons from Belichick, although they are going for a perfect season themselves. How long has it been since a team went un-victorious?!?!?!?

  4. The last winless team was the Tampa Bay Bucs. They went 0 – 14 in 1974 or ’76.

My point of contention with the Pats cheating is that they were called on it several times by other teams and told to stop by the NFL. Yet, they kept doing it. Then, they act like they did nothing wrong and that everyone is out to get them. The team has certainly took on the mentality of its head coach. (Who, I will admit, is a great coach, but a jerk by most accounts. Of course, if he had fulfilled his contract and became the NY Jets head coach and won Super Bowls for the Jets, my opinion of him would probably be better. He’d still be a jerk, but he’d be my team’s jerk!)

And the NFL didn’t help matters by destroying all the gathered evidence/tapes without letting anyone see it. I’ve read some articles saying that the NFL was trying to hide the fact that the Pats cheated in their Super Bowls. I don’t know about that, but I still think the NFL should have gave each tape to the team that was shown on it. That way, each team would know what was recorded and where it was recorded at. That would have cut down on the conspiracy theories.

  5. “And the NFL didn’t help matters by destroying all the gathered evidence/tapes without letting anyone see it.”

Hmmm, sounds familiar — like the CIA.
